Updated on April 19, 2022, 5:14 a.m.
The name "Telangana" refers to the word Trilinga Desam, earned due to the presence of three ancient Shiva temples at Srisailam, Draksharamam and Kaleshwaram. During the reign of the Nizams, the region was known as Telugu Angana (Garden of the Telugu speaking people) to differentiate it from the regions where Marathi language was spoken.
The Marathi and Kannada language zones of Hyderabad state was then merged with Karnataka and Maharashtra respectively while Telugu speaking province of Telangana was merged with Andhra state with Hyderabad as the capital of Andhra Pradesh state in 1956. Great empires like the Gupta Mauryas, Mughals and other empires have ruled Telangana for many years.
Telangana or Telingana, as pronounced by the locals is an important and the integral state of south-central India.
