Located in the western area of India, Maharashtra is the third-largest state in India in area and the second-largest in terms of population. Maharashtra stretches over 307,694 sq. km with a complete projected population of 116 million. The state shares borders with Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
The Arabian Sea marks up the state's western coast and it is an amazing haul of rich natural and non-natural resources. The state capital, Mumbai, is the sixth-largest metropolitan region in the world and India‘s biggest and most populated city. Poona is considered as the Oxford of Maharashtra state as it has highest number of Indian and foreign universities.
Village industries in Maharashtra are primarily worried with the processing of local raw materials for local markets with simple methods. Government of Maharashtra is doing everything to boost the rural enterprises on a large scale. Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) is a gigantic step in that direction and was introduced in the year 2011, under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 in Maharashtra State.
The possibility for such industries depends, in part, on their relation to the matching large-scale industry, in part, on the development of agriculture and the growth of rural facilities.
Rural industries in Maharashtra contain all the industries run by rural people in or near their homes as a partial or complete occupation. Government of Maharashtra has propelled various schemes for the evolution and development of the people living in rural areas. These are based on the Rural Industrialisation Programme Utilisation of Locally Available Raw Materials, Skill, Technics and Capital.
Many of the rural industries are revolving their activities around their traditional approach and profession to earn and magnify their activities. Government of Maharashtra has spearheaded a scheme known as the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM)to amplify the development of industries in the rural areas like the:

ROLE OF RURAL INDUSTRIES IN THE STRENGTHENING OF MAHARASHTRA STATE UNDER THE MAHARASHTRA STATE RURAL LIVELIHOODS MISSION (MSRLM)
In Maharashtra, Cottage and Village Industries have been an essential occupation of the landless and other poor people in villages for ages. It is a vital source of income and employment prospects for the people. As a matter of fact, agriculture and rural industries are two sides of a coin.
The Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) has been complimenting each other to accomplish the maximum returns in the rural arena. This sector has the second largest share of employment after agriculture in Maharashtra.
It touches the lives of the weaker and unorganised sections of the society, with more than half of those employed being women, minorities and the marginalised.
Fifty seven per cent of the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) units are owner-run enterprises with one person inside the house or outside. They account for 33% of the workforce and 29% of the value added in non-agricultural private standalone establishments in Maharashtra.
With the liberalisation and globalisation of the economy that started in 1991 and the exclusion of measurable restrictions, the smaller units of the village industry sector are facing solid competition.

ROLE OF VILLAGE SMALL INDUSTRIES (VSI) IN THE MAGNIFICATION OF MAHARASHTRA STATE UNDER THE MAHARASHTRA STATE RURAL LIVELIHOODS MISSION (MSRLM)
The Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) introduced by the Government of Maharashtra is important in promoting the growth and development of Village and Small Industries. The Village and Small Industries (VSI) sector in Maharashtra contributes to around one-third of India’s export earnings despite getting only a minor share of the plan allocations.
It is sarcastic that despite its tremendous export potential, promotion of exports from VSI has not figured in our five year plans as a proof of development of this sector.
This does not, however, mean that there have not been any measures to certify and enhance the exports of Village and Small Industries in Maharashtra State. Organisations like the Handicrafts and Handlooms Exports Corporation and Central Industries Corporation are indications of government willpower to boost the exports of VSI products.
However, the fact remains that our five year plans have not projected the contribution to exports as an important objective of the development of the Village and Small Industries despite their impressive export potential.
During 2000-2004 the small enterprises sector registered nonstop growth in the number of Components, Manufacture, Employment and Export.

An enormous percentage of India’s population lives in the villages where illiteracy still prevails and large industry in cities are not in a position to absorb the work force from rural areas due to lack of qualification and skillsets.
In view of this, it is compulsory to generate more employment opportunities in villages by exploiting the local resources and skills so that rural people can get work in the villages of Maharashtra. The Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM) is the scheme that fits the aspirations of the rural youth of the state of Maharashtra.
