Fisheries and aquaculture in Rajasthan

Fisheries and aquaculture is one of the vital sources of economic growth and development in the state of Rajasthan. The fishing segment is said to be one of the major source of livelihood in the state for more than 11 million people. The impact of the Pandemic like COVID-19 has destroyed the fishing industry in the state and most of the fisherman has been left in the lurch.
Even though Rajasthan is not a coastal state, the interest of people towards fishing has not changed. They go near the lakes and rivers and catch fish and consume them. As per the data received at least 10% of the overhaul population of Rajasthan is into fishing and related services.
The processes of fishing dates back many centuries ago, and were in place much before the use of the modern methodologies in the state. The state consists of huge number of water bodies like huge lakes and rivers offering tremendous potential for the growth and development of fisheries. Rajasthan does consist of lot of the freshwater resources like some rivers and canals.
Fishing in the state is fast picking up and this is also a major source of employment to millions of the people and also contributes to the development of the food security in the state.
The Government of Rajasthan brought in a unique scheme known as the Livelihood Model launched by the department of Fisheries, a unique scheme, where in the fisheries are given prominence and stressed on increasing the fish production and also play a foremost role in protecting the interest of the tribal fisherman in Rajasthan and promoting their welfare in the state under the leadership of Shri. Ashok Gehlot.
OBJECTIVES OF THE LIVELIHOOD MODEL
- Development of major water reserves in three reservoirs like Jaisamand in Udaipur, Mahi Bajaj Sager in Banswara and Kadana backwaters in Dungarpur.
- To enhance and develop the diversification of the Aquaculture activities in Rajasthan.
- Giving the realistic price to the fisherman in the state for their produce and avoiding the existence of the middlemen.
- To bridge the gap and encourage completion of the existing fisheries project in the state.
VISION OF THE LIVELIHOOD MODEL
To achieve the fish rearing and production by enhancing the usage of modern technologies and new equipment’s in fishing in the state and to generate good fish productivity with amazing quality by the end of 2030.
MISSION OF THE LIVELIHOOD MODEL
- Increase the production of the fresh water and salt water fishes in the state under the livelihood model.
- To enhance and diversify the aquaculture activities and generate revenue by bringing in more fishermen.
- Giving importance to Inland Fisheries in the state and promoting them.
- Generate employment in the field of Aquaculture and Fisheries in the state which is at a budding stage.
FEATURES OF THE LIVELIHOOD MODEL
The features of the livelihood models as per the Government of Rajasthan are given below as follows:
- Providing a major source of livelihood for many fishing communities in the state of Rajasthan.
- Transforming the fisheries into modern industry by using new technologies and methods.
- Protecting the interest of 40,000 fishermen in the state and giving them their due benefits.
- Giving more inputs for the fish based industries and fish markets in the state.
- Effective use of the database and Geographical Information Systems regarding the fisheries segment.
- Giving information about the fish and the nutritional value of the fishes and raising awareness about the food security.
- Providing more Technical Expertise in fisheries at the College of Fisheries at the Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology at Udaipur.
- Investment in fish hatcheries to increase the production of fishes in the state.
- Encouraging the development of Tanks, Reservoirs and Ponds in the state with coordination from the Department of fisheries under the Rajasthan government.
- To offer an assistance in procuring the Fishing Nets, Equipment’s and Fishing Boats to the fishermen.
SERVICES OFFERED UNDER THE LIVELIHOOD MODEL SPONSORED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF RAJASTHAN
There are various services offered under the Livelihood Model sponsored by the fisheries department of the Government of Rajasthan and it is given below as follows:
- Development of Fishing Segment in Bassipada in Banswara to enhance the fish development culture in the state.
- Construction of fish landing centres at Ramsagar in Dholpur, Rana Pratap Sagar in Rawatbhada and Tonk has been completed.
- Construction of fish breeding and hatching centres in Jaisamand in Udaipur has been completed.
- Boosting the growth and the development of the Inland Fisheries in the state.
- Providing training to fishermen in Rajasthan on a daily basis for INR 125 and offering transport cost of INR 500.
- Introducing new fishing vessels in the state to develop inland fishing infrastructure.
- Promoting the Endangered tribes, SC, ST, and the fishing co-operatives to take up the fishing development in the state.
- Development of Fish Storage Units for preservation of fisheries.
- Development of Modern Fish Markets in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Tonk and other places in the state.
- Providing the shelter and quarter facility for the homeless and poor fishermen in the state and 25 hectares has been procured.
- Giving the insurance coverage to 40,000 fishermen in the state by giving coverage of INR 50000 to 100000.
- Establishment of fish food units and fish hatcheries in the state to boost fisheries in Rajasthan.
LIST OF THE FISH FARMS IN RAJASTHAN
Due to the hard work done by the Government of Rajasthan many fish farms have come up and it is given below as follows:
- RTADCF (Rajasthan Tribal Area Development Cooperative Federation) Hatchery located at Jaisamand.
- Soorsagar Fish Farm at Kota.
- Guvadi Fish Seed Farms at Bhuvadi.
- Choudhury Fish Hatchery at Hanumangarh.
- Kasimpura Fish Farm at Kota.
- Thar Fish Hatchery at Chatargarh.
To be honest, the work done by the Government of Rajasthan in terms of Fishing and Fisheries in particular is very low compared to other states in India. However, the Livelihood Model in fisheries introduced by the fisheries department of the Rajasthan Government will play a vital role in lifting the Inland fisheries in Lakes, Canals and Rivers of the state of Rajasthan.
