History of The Bank of Nova Scotia

The Bank of Nova Scotia is also known as Banque de Nouvelle-Écosse in the western world and located in Toronto in Canada. This bank was set up on March, 30 1832 and this is the 5th largest bank located in Canada after Bank of Montreal, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Royal Bank of Canada and the Toronto Dominion Bank. We have an amazing customer base consisting of 30 million customers world wide and provide a huge range of products and services. 

The Scotia bank was established in 1832 in Halifax at Nova Scotia and this is located in various parts of Canada and we have got lot of acquisitions from various banks in Carribbean and Latin Americas. This bank is a member of London Bullion Market Association and the global authority on the trade of precious metals known as the London Bullion Market Association.

We also created a Mortgage Department in 1954 to handle the mortgage issues. Furthermore, the Bank of Nova Scotia began to acquire various banks like the Bank of Brunswick in 1913, Metropolitan Bank of Toronto in 1914, Bank of Ottawa in 1919 and after this for the next 3 years The Bank of Nova Scotia was running under loss due to the great depression of the 1920. Later onwards, we got the acquisition of Banco Intercontinental in 1986, Monteal Trust in 1994, Mocatta Bullion in 1997.

In 1975 Bank of Nova Scotia adopted the name Scotiabank as its famous promoting brand name. In 2012 we got the Tangerine Bank a subsidiary and made our presence felt in American and European markets.

Legal Issues

  • There was an investigation in 2001 into the sudden death of  Mrs. Maru Oropesa, a Scotiabank branch manager in Mexico City and interesting revelation came up where in USD 14 million were missing from the branch. Initially, investigators found that Oropesa and Jaime Ross, her former boss, had illegally transferred USD 5 million from client investment accounts to purchase personal aircraft. Mr. Jaime Ross was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment and some of the employees were terminated. 
  • David Berry, a very successful Canadian Scotiabank trader who had built a USD 75 million/year business in trading preferred shares, was fired in 2005 because he breached many security protocols. He filed a USD 100 Million case on the bank and Scotia bank had a secret discussion with him for some reasonable settlement.
