The Punjab National Bank is one of the major Indian Public Sector bank set up by the Government of India under the umbrella of the Ministry of Finance. This bank was created on May 1894 and is the second largest bank in India due to business activities and the network it has obtained in the past. Interestingly the Punjab National Bank started its operations on April 12 1895 from Anarkali Bazaar, Lahore, modern day Pakistan. The spirit of patriotism and nationalism led to the rise of this bank and this was managed by the Indians.

The Punjab National Bank scam relates to fraudulent letter of undertaking worth INR 16,000 crore issued by the bank. The key accused in the case were jeweller and designer Nirav Modi, his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi, and some of his relatives and PNB employees holding crucial positions. Nirav Modi and his relatives escaped India in early 2018, months before the news of the scam hogged the limelight. PNB had named three diamond firms, Diamonds R Us, Solar Exports and Stellar Diamonds as the beneficiaries in the scam. PNB scam has been classified as the biggest fraud in India's banking history. The Government of India has requested Antiguan Government to extradite Mehul Choksi immediately and the matter is still in the court. Nirav Modi has been arrested and is in Wandsworth Prison in South London and Mr. Mehul Choksi is in Antigua and Barbuda because he is a citizen there and prevented from leaving the nation. The matter is still in court.
